Patreon Creator Search (Mockup)
Project Overview
Company: Patreon
Industry: Tech
Role: Mockup UX Designer
Duration: 2 Weeks
Project Background
Patreon, a prominent platform for creatives, faced a critical challenge: the limitation of its discovery process. Patrons primarily relied on a basic search field (seen below), which restricted the exposure of the diverse and talented creators on the platform.
Business goal
The primary objective was to amplify the discoverability of creatives on Patreon, thereby fostering increased engagement and support from a wider range of patrons. This enhancement was aimed at boosting patronage, creator satisfaction, and the overall growth of Patreon's user base and revenue.
Target user segment
My focus was on both new and existing patrons keen on exploring and supporting creatives across various genres, especially those without specific creators in mind.
My approach
Phase 1: Generative user interviews
I conducted in-depth interviews with individuals outside the current user base of Patreon, leveraging platforms like Dovetail and User Testing to gather data. My goal was to understand their content preferences, expectations for discoverability, and perceived barriers to supporting creators on platforms like Patreon.
Phase 2: Ideation
I leveraged insights from these interviews to brainstorm innovative features that could enhance the discovery process on Patreon and provide additional opportunities for other creators to be discovered.
Phase 3: Prototype development
I developed wireframes and prototypes for the new discovery interface, integrating ideas from the research and ideation phases.
Phase 4: User testing
I tested the prototype with a group of potential users with Maze, gathering valuable feedback to refine the design further. This provided insight for both the existing and proposed design for quick comparison without the need for immediate implementation.
Phase 5: Handover documentation
Post-testing, I prepared comprehensive documentation and a Figma file for a seamless transition to Patreon's engineering team.
Potential success metrics
Potential Project Outcomes
Conclusion
Nordic Nota's redesign of the Patreon discovery experience marks a significant stride in connecting patrons with creatives. My user-centered approach and innovative solutions have paved the way for a more inclusive and thriving creative community on Patreon.
